For Parents

Dear Great Lakes Family,

As we are ending this school year, we are already looking forward to next year!   This letter is labeled with your child’s teacher for next year.  Knowing the next year’s teacher is beneficial to students but occasionally it becomes necessary to make adjustments.  If this occurs, we will notify you on or before the first day of school.

Our annual school orientation, Great Start, is on September 5, 2017.  This year all stations, except classroom visits, will be held in the gym.   Pictures will be taken at a later date (9/15/17)

All the forms that parents are required to fill out at the beginning of the year will be accessible on line and will need to be updated on line.  You will be getting an email from the School District at a later date with the information on how to access these forms.  If no email is on file, you will be getting a letter in the mail.   Please fill these forms out prior to Great Start.  It is essential that we have updated contact information in case of an emergency. Please make sure we have any address changes on file.

Classroom Visit:  Please stop and visit during one of the following scheduled classroom meetings.  This will be an informal meet and greet to just stop in, meet your child’s teacher, drop off supplies and a brief look around the room.  Please visit your child’s classroom during one of these times designated for your child’s last name:

Last name A through I:           8:45-11:00- informal meet & greet in classrooms

Last name J through R:           11:45-1:45- informal meet & greet in classrooms

Last name S through Z:          1:45-3:15-informal meet & greet in classroomsPlease bring school supplies on this day.  If you have any circumstances that you wish to discuss with your child’s teacher at length, please set up an appointment for a meeting at a later date.

School Pictures; Pictures will be taken at a later date.

Lunch Forms and Student Numbers:  Food Service will have a station for families to visit.     Each of our students has an identification number for breakfast and lunch.  At this station, students will be asked to practice punching in their number or get help if they don’t know the number. Students will be required to know their number to sign on to school computers as well.

Parent Connections: Each teacher will also have a Parent-to-Parent Connection sheet for their classroom. Families are encouraged to share, as they are comfortable, their address, phone, etc. so that families know how to connect with each other for birthdays, play dates, etc.  Each family will receive a copy of this information for their use during the year.

Nurse: If your child requires medication or special services from our School Health Assistant, please bring them with you.  Our school nurse will have the necessary forms for you to fill out.  Please take the time to stop if your child has any medical issues, requires medication, allergies, etc.  This important opportunity will help our school nurse provide the best care possible for your child.

Parent Teacher Association:  Fill out a membership form, sign-up for volunteer opportunities, find out about fundraising, and see what PTA has for you and your child.  We have a fabulous PTA who does an amazing job for Great Lakes children.  PTA membership is $8.00 for the year.

Free breakfast for all Great Lakes students will be available from 8:30-9:30. Lunches will also be served from 11:30 - 1:00.  The cost for lunch is $2.10 for students and $3.50  for adults. Students with existing lunch accounts may have the cost of their lunch charged to their account.  During the school year all meals and snack milk can be paid to the Food Service Office, 3025 Tower, online at www.myschoolbucks.com or to the cashier in our dining room. Payments made one week prior to school starting ensure the account is accurate when school begins. You can now apply for free and/or reduced online at www.myheartlandapps.com

Bus service begins on this day.  If your child qualifies for transportation, and it is new to them, this is a great way to make this transition.  You may put your child on the bus and meet them here at school.

We have a wonderful and caring staff at Great Lakes and we can’t wait to partner with you as a member of our learning community.  We look forward to meeting with you on September 5thLet’s have a Great Start together.

You will receive a reminder letter in the fall for Great Start day.  Have a wonderful summer!
